A favourite with all the family is a day’s outing to the Anglo Saxon royal burial site where the priceless Sutton Hoo treasure was discovered in a huge ship grave. The exhibition tells the story of the site – which has been described as ‘page one of English history’ – and displays some of the original objects as well as replicas of the treasure. The burial site forms part of a 245-acre estate with excellent walks.

      Roller Skate

Colchester is home to Europe’s finest roller-skating rink, Rollerworld, where everyone can enjoy the fun from the absolute beginner to the more experienced skater.

You can play laser battles at Quasar too. There is even an indoor go-kart track – Indikart – with long straights and challenging corners, ideal for novices and more experienced drivers alike. At Colchester’s Megabowl, with its computerised scoring system, there is everything you need for an enjoyable time ten-pin bowling.

Young children will love the action packed fun at Go Bananas, a 12,000 sq. ft indoor adventure play company, housing a 3 storey jungle adventure specially for 5 – 11 year olds. For the under fives there is a large children’s village.

Afterwards you could take a walk in Castle Park with its beautiful gardens and children’s boating lake.

The Watershed Studio in St. Osyth has a full year's programme of art and craft classes to suit all. And why not visit Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum and Castle House, his home, studios and gardens. There you will be able to view a large collection of paintings representing Sir Alfred's life work, augmented by a private loan collection of paintings not usually shown to the public.

Visit Layer Marney Tower and see the tallest Tudor gate in England with exquisite early 16th century Italiante decoration, gardens and tearoom.  Or visit Mistley Towers, the notable remains of a church designed by the famous architect Robert Adams, and built in 1776, a project, which was never finished. The National Trust Bourne Mill is also worth a visit. A 16th century fishing lodge converted into a mill with much of its machinery still intact and a picturesque mill pond.

For a different outing take a trip to the Secret Nuclear Bunker – the biggest and deepest cold war bunker open to the public in South East England. Nestled in the heart of the Essex countryside lies the twilight and once highly secret world of the cold war. Build in great secrecy at the start of the cold war and under strict military security it was from here central government and military commanders would have run the region in the event of a nuclear attack.

For the railway enthusiast visit Colne Valley Railway which houses the largest collection of operational heritage engines, carriages and wagons in the county and runs through one of the prettiest parts of the Colne Valley.

Garden lovers will also relish a trip to the world-famous Beth Chatto Gardens at nearby Elmstead Market, with its gravel, water and woodland gardens. The gardens were begun in 1960. Beth Chatto, when faced with all kinds of difficult conditions – dry, damp soil in sun and shade, put into practice the underlying principles of what is now referred to as ‘Ecological Gardening’. Beth Chatto was awarded an OBE for “services to horticulture” in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List. Beth Chatto gardens are well worth a visit or two!
