The Old Stables Courtyard

Leaving traffic sounds behind you will soon find yourselves entering a substantial farmstead and in a leafy, well-tended enclave that could be a ‘hundred miles from anywhere’ you will find The Old Stables cottage.

Passing through the gate into a pretty courtyard, surrounded by glorious hanging baskets and tubs bursting with flowers, you might linger a moment to take in the fragrances of lavender, rosemary, and thyme by the stable door.

On first sight you would never guess that The Old Stables Cottage once housed the four carriage horses to the 14th Century Hall, except perhaps for the gentle reminders such as the harnesses hanging from the original oak beams that you might notice upon entering.

Designed with every comfort in mind this cottage is more a country home, with its original oil paintings, antiques and flowers.

The Old Stables Lounge

The front stable door opens into a warm inviting porch with ample room for all those muddy boots, walking shoes and coats. Passing through you will find walking sticks thoughtfully provided for those early morning strolls and a lantern high above your head.

The Old Stables Kitchen The large open plan kitchen and dining area with its sturdy pine table and chairs, has a lovely warm feel, decorated in Laura Ashley’s ‘Pumpkin’ with pretty matching pumpkin and nutmeg country flower curtains. The floors are oak, the tiles Fired Earth; this fully fitted oak kitchen has all the equipment of a luxury home. There is even a Brita water filter and cafetierre. After your journey you may want to sit down and enjoy the fully laid tea tray awaiting your arrival.
Under the oak beam archway a lounge of noble proportions beckons you further in. Here can be found a delightful collection of miniature oil paintings by Lucy Miller including detailed compositions of birds and hidden high in the spectacular beamed vaulted ceiling, a barn owl perches. A deep sofa with large comfy cushions invites you to sit a while and look through the French windows that lead onto a large patio and private garden. Here you might glimpse a peacock or two passing through or spot the woodpeckers that visit the garden frequently.  In one corner, a bookcase, filled with books, videos and CDs and a games cupboard for those that want to play cards, or challenge their family and friends to a quiz game or two. Or you may prefer to sit peacefully around the fireside and soak up the atmosphere; it is that special here.   The Old Stables Vaulted Ceiling

Opening off the lounge is a delightful double bedroom with a magnificent oak beam running the full length of the high ceiling. Bathed in the warm glow of Farrow & Ball’s ‘Hay’ which provides the perfect setting for Sanderson’s curtains and luxury bed linens, there is a large canvas painting to the right of the window.  In the spacious bathroom, painted in Laura Ashley’s ‘Lavender’, a full size bath can be found with dazzling white and lilac wall tiles and a separate walk in power-shower. There is a large wall cabinet over the washstand, complete with lights and mirrors that open wide out, a shaving point and a heated towel rail.

The master bedroom, with it’s wall to wall fitted wardrobes and central vanity unit has depth and warmth created by Farrow & Ball’s ‘Straw’ complimented by the gold and reds of Sanderson’s tulip curtains.  The Old Stables Twin Bedded Room

The crystal drops from the glass wall lights and table lights, sparkle and reflect the light around the wonderful beamed walls; the mood is set. Either side of the great boon of a six-foot bed, or twin beds if you prefer, are cabinets complete with bedside carafes, hairdryer, writing pads, and even handmade chocolates. The high apex beamed ceiling has a delightful wall painting. On opposite sides of the room are double windows with views out across the lawn to the ancient oak tree beyond and the pretty courtyard with wooden bench.
